Sheriff Paul C. May has released the following information:
RE: Skip Bryant Memorial Golf Tournament

On Saturday, October 22, 2011, (36) teams made up of (4) golfers gathered for the 19th Annual Skip Bryant Golf Tournament at Okeechobee Golf & Country Club. This golf tournament is in memory of Deputy Grover “Skip” Bryant III who is the only Okeechobee County Deputy Sheriff killed in the line of duty, during a search and rescue mission on Lake Okeechobee.

To keep his memory alive, members of the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office work diligently every year to obtain sponsors for the holes, collect items from businesses in the community and sign up the golfers.

Monies raised at the golf tournament are allocated for scholarships that are awarded to the children of Law Enforcement and Fire/Rescue personnel. In addition to the scholarships, the fund is also utilized as an assistance fund to aid our Law Enforcement and Fire Department families in their time of need.

To date, $149,745.00 has been awarded to (57) students attending college and receiving their college degrees. Additionally, $75,650.63 has aided (62) families in their time of need. This year’s tournament raised $17,889.09.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the community for their generosity and support of this annual event. Also thank you to all the volunteers and golfers.

Hope to see you next year!

Undersheriff Noel Stephen said of the event, “The support that this fund receives from our community makes me proud to live and work in Okeechobee. Thank You!”
